The IHC is hiring UCSB humanities and humanistic social science graduate students to work in Finding Fiesta, a summer community engagement program.
Application deadline: 5:00 PM, May 9, 2025
This program is a collaboration between the IHC, the Santa Barbara Unified School District (SBUSD), and the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation (SBTHP), for the purpose of developing lesson plans for SBUSD junior high and high school students that explore Old Spanish Days – Fiesta. First begun in 1924, Fiesta is a Santa Barbara institution that enlists local businesses, community organizations, and residents to celebrate the “Old Spanish Days.” For over one hundred years, Fiesta has contributed to the public image of the City as dominated by its Spanish legacy. During the three-day workshop to be held at SBTHP, graduate students will support teachers as they develop lesson plans based upon the archival research they will be doing into the history of Fiesta. The lessons will be designed to enable SBUSD students to consider how the City’s colonial past has shaped the celebration and also how the many communities that comprise the City have reimagined Fiesta to reflect their own histories and experiences.
Program Dates: The workshop will take place from 9 am – 4 pm, July 29–31.
Compensation: Graduate students will receive a $700 stipend.
Application Materials: Submit an application with a CV and cover letter describing your qualifications and relevant experience by Friday, May 9, 2025.
Inquiries can be directed to IHC Assistant Director Casey Haughin-Scasny (haughinscasny@ihc.ucsb.edu).
