Montreal Benesch

Montreal Benesch is an M.A./Ph.D. student in the Department of Linguistics. Their research focuses on queer and trans linguistics, participant-centered methods, creative expression, and embodiment. They founded and co-curated trans*languaging, an art show by multilingual trans artists about their relationships with their languages. Montreal has an upcoming chapter in Battlefield Linguistics: Queer, Trans, and Feminist Interventions in Linguistic and Discursive Change about their BA thesis, a sociophonetic study of how genderfluid individuals use language as a semiotic resource to construct their genders. They also have a co-authored chapter about neoliberalism and non-binary representation in the upcoming publication Sex Change and the City, an anthology of trans perspectives on “Sex and the City.”
