Global Indigeneities Research Focus Group

The Global Indigeneities Research Focus Group is motivated by the recognition that Indigenous peoples represent diverse histories, experiences, and forms of knowledge across the world. This global perspective is particularly important given the distribution of Indigenous peoples: approximately 70.5 percent live in Asia and the Pacific, 16.3 percent in Africa, 11.5 percent in Latin America and the Caribbean, and 1.6 percent in North America. As scholarship increasingly attends to Indigenous experiences across different regions, the RFG seeks to foster conversations that reflect this diversity and encourage comparative and cross-regional approaches to the study of indigeneity. Particular attention will be given to Indigenous experiences and scholarship from underrepresented regions while remaining committed to dialogue across different Indigenous contexts worldwide. The conveners and participants bring diverse regional and disciplinary perspectives to the study of indigeneity. The backgrounds of the conveners in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Americas reflect the global scope of the group and its commitment to engaging Indigenous experiences across different regions and contexts. This diversity strengthens the group’s capacity to foster interdisciplinary dialogue, support graduate student research, and encourage collaborative scholarship at UCSB.
