This event is free but space is limited; please reserve a ticket here.

In a special Cinephile Saturday program, the Pollock Theater is proud to present Seven Samurai on 35mm film.  Kurosawa’s masterpiece tells the story of a poor village under attack by bandits, which recruits seven unemployed samurai to help the villagers defend themselves. This event is presented in conjunction with the 2017 UCSB Reads program.  This year’s text for the program, Into the Beautiful North by Luis Alberto Urrea, draws on the classic western The Magnificent Seven (1960), which in turn was based on Seven Samurai. In the  book, 19-year old Nayeli is inspired after watching The Magnificent Seven (1960; an American Western remake of Seven Samurai) to head north to recruit seven men to protect her Mexican village from bandidos.

The event will be followed by a reception in the Michael Douglas Lobby.

Sponsored by the Carsey-Wolf Center, The Department of Film & Media Studies and the UCSB Library’s 2017 UCSB Reads Program.
