The Interdisciplinary Humanities Center supports UCSB faculty
efforts to secure extra-mural funding for research projects
in the humanities, arts, and humanistic social sciences at
all stages of project development and funding, from finding
funding sources to grant administration.
Finding Funding Sources
Assistance in locating and identifying suitable funding agencies
is available through:
- Funding Searches: Individual fund searches
are performed for faculty upon request. To initiate a funding
search, please contact Holly Unruh (x7799; hunruh@ihc.ucsb.edu)
or email her the following information: a short project
description, tentative dates of project activities, and
the kinds of support needed (e.g. travel, release time).
- Electronic Databases on funding sources:
UCSB faculty and students interested in doing their own
funding searches can access the following databases:
Illinois Research Information Service (IRIS) (http://carousel.lis.uiuc.edu/~iris/databases.html)
Community of Science (COS) (http://fundingopps.cos.com)
Workshops on using these databases will be offered upon
request.
- Supplementary Research on funding sources:
Additional information about funding agencies can be found
in annual reports and other published materials, and is
available upon request.
Project Development and Proposal Preparation
General guidance and detailed consultation on project formulation,
proposal writing and budget issues for extramural grants are
provided through:
- Workshops: Workshops for faculty seeking
extramural funding in the humanities and arts are offered
at various times during the academic year.
- Individual consultation: Faculty are
invited to make appointments with Dr. Lai to discuss their
projects and any aspects of fellowship and grant proposal
writing and preparation.
- Budget preparation: The IHC business
officer, Theresa Pena, assists faculty in detailed budget
preparation for all grants submitted through the Center.
Cost Sharing on Extramural
Grants
The Interdisciplinary Humanities Center provides cost-sharing
to leverage extramural research grants for projects in the
humanities, arts, and humanistic social sciences that are
interdisciplinary in nature. Grant proposals for which IHC
cost-sharing is requested should be submitted through the
Center, and the Center shall administer all extramural research
grants for which it provides cost-sharing.
Cost-sharing requests should be made in a memo to the IHC
Director, specifying the amount of cost-sharing requested
and its intended use (e.g. research assistance, research expenses,
travel, summer salary, etc.), with a copy of the extramural
grant application (including a detailed budget and the curriculum
vitae of the faculty member(s) involved in the project) attached.
There are no deadlines, but requests should be made no later
than the extramural grant application due date. Requests are
reviewed by a faculty committee once every quarter during
the academic year. The amount of award varies, generally with
a maximum of $3,000 for 12-month projects and $10,000 for
3-year projects.
For more information, please contact Holly Unruh (x7799;
hunruh@ihc.ucsb.edu). Prospective applicants are encouraged
to consult with her before submitting grant proposals
and cost-sharing requests.
Proposal Submission
The IHC works in coordination with the Office of Research
to submit proposals for extramural funding in the humanities,
arts, and humanistic social sciences. All grant proposals
are subject to review prior to submission. To ensure proper
review, proposals should reach the IHC at least seven working
days before the agency deadline.
IHC staff will assist in the completion of forms required
by the agency and the University, and be responsible for making
the required number of copies and submitting the application
package on time.
The IHC will administer funds for successful grant proposals
submitted through the Center.
