Since his widely acclaimed book/exhibit Fish Story (1995) Allan Sekula’s photographic work and writing have focused a critical lens on the role of containerization in a rapidly globalizing economy. Singling out the shipping container as a symbol and an object, Sekula’s subtle and provocative mix of photographs, narratives and history writing expose the sometimes hidden connections between disparate peoples, places and cultures that underlie international commerce in the 21st century while examining the role of the photograph in the formation of social memory.
