Rural Studio:
Towards an Architecture of Decency
D.K. Ruth (Rural Studio / Auburn University, Alabama)
Wednesday, November 12 / 5:00 P.M.
Isla Vista Theatre
960 Embarcadero del Norte, Isla Vista
D.K.Ruth will talk about the extraordinary work of Rural Studio, the
program he co-founded with the late Samuel Mockbee in 1992 in which
architecture students at Auburn University consult with the rural poor
of Alabama’s Hale County to design and construct customized homes
and communal meeting places using experimental building techniques and
found, donated and ‘diverted’ materials.
“In a time when architectural attention focuses on large, glossy
urban projects and palatial homes, the Rural Studio provides an alternative
of substance. In addition to being a social welfare venture, the Rural
Studio is also an educational experiment and a prod to the architectural
profession to act on its best instincts. . . The work of Rural Studio
has struck such a chord—both architecturally and socially—that
it has been featured on Oprah, Nightline, and CBS News, as well as in
Time and People magazines.” ----- Andrea Oppenheimer & Timothy
Hursley
