Application Instructions and Guidelines

Deadline: January 15, 2008
(For projects taking place in the 2008-2009 academic year)

The Interdisciplinary Humanities Center offers an annual collaborative project award (up to $3,000) to encourage graduate student collaboration beyond the confines and conventions of particular departments and disciplines within the Arts & Humanities, and between the Arts & Humanities, Social Sciences, and Sciences. Groups of graduate students from at least two departments and academic programs are eligible to apply. A faculty advisor is recommended but not required. Eligible projects include conferences, symposia, exhibitions, and performances. Projects that experiment with a combination of dissemination formats are encouraged. Besides making a significant contribution to current scholarship and research practices, proposed projects should seek to

  • frame their questions, methods and modes of inquiry with reference to two or more established disciplines/fields of study, and/or
  • foster the development of new objects and areas of study, and new ways of producing, presenting, and disseminating knowledge

The winning project will be designated an IHC activity and accorded full administrative support.

A complete application should include:

  • a cover sheet (download form)
  • a project description (5 pages, double spaced, see instructions below)
  • a preliminary budget (briefly explain any budget items that are not self-explanatory; the IHC does not fund equipment costs)
  • brief curriculum vitae (2 pages maximum) of the project organizers

The project description should:

  • state the objectives, ideas, and methodology of the project
  • discuss the project’s significance and originality with reference to current scholarship and/or arts practice
  • specify the interdisciplinary scope of the project
  • explain the nature of the collaboration and how it will advance knowledge and scholarship in the field of study
  • state the particular expertise and potential contribution of each participant
  • define the project’s target audience(s) and the form(s) in which it will be disseminated
  • include a timetable and work plan, specifying project activities

Nine complete sets of application must be received at the IHC (HSSB 6046) no later than 5:00pm on the deadline date.
