Norvene Vest, O.S.B.
"Friend of the Soul:
A Benedictine Spirituality of Work"

Noted for
exploring the application of the centuries old Benedictine Rule and monastic
tradition to modern life, Norvene Vest examines ways to integrate contemplative
practices into the work environment. She emphasizes the relationship between
the Benedictine practices of silence, prayer, and holy reading and our modern
work lives. Vest served 15 years in the "War on Poverty" at federal,
state, and local levels. In 1974, she ran for State Assembly in California,
and subsequently was appointed Deputy Director for the Department of Housing
and Community Development, where she directed the preparation and implementation
of the statewide housing plan. Vest is currently a lay member of a Benedictine
Monastery in Valyermo, California.
