William Pace, Executive Director of the World Federalist Movement and Secretary-General of the Hague Appeal for Peace, will inaugurate our new "Global Forces in the Post-Cold War World" lecture series at UCSB. He will discuss "Globalization and Democracy" on Thursday, October 12 at 3:30 in North Hall room 1006.

According to Pace, “the issue of democratization of the international order calls for the best proposals and political will that we can muster. We are facing a terrible dilemma where the globalization of commerce and trade is not being followed with the globalization of democracy. Indeed, the international financial institutions such as the World Trade Organization and the International Monetary Fund are being empowered to make broad-reaching decisions behind closed doors that have serious social and environmental repercussions. Without the involvement of the more open, universal body of the United Nations, we risk the creation of exactly the wrong kind of world government: the rule of few over the many. We must bring together all our strength to see that this does not happen.”

The World Federalist Movement is an international citizen's movement working for justice, peace, and sustainable prosperity. It calls for an end to the rule of force through a world governed by law, based on strengthened and democratized world institutions. It is inspired by the democratic principles of federalism. World Federalists support the creation of democratic global structures accountable to the citizens of the world. World federalism calls for the division of international authority among separate agencies, a separation of powers among judicial, executive and parliamentary bodies. World Federalists are united in seeking to bring peace and justice to the world community through effective global institutions and binding international law.

The WFM international secretariat is based in New York City, USA, across from the United Nations. Founded in 1947 in Montreux, Switzerland, the Movement brings together organizations and individuals committed to the vision of a "just world order through a strengthened United Nations." WFM has ECOSOC consultative status at the United Nations. WFM has 23 member organizations and 16 associated organizations.

This event is part of the "Global Forces in the Post-Cold War World" lecture series being sponsored by the UC Institute for Global Conflict and Cooperation, UCSB Arts & Lectures, Global and International Studies Program, Global Peace and Security Program and Interdisciplinary Humanities Center. It is being put on in partnership with the Santa Barbara Committee on Foreign Relations, Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, PAX 2100, International Studies Association at Santa Barbara City College, and the International Studies Program at Ventura College.
