TALK: Freedom is Not Enough:
The Secret of the Sixties that Transformed America
Nancy MacLean (History, Northwestern University)
Thursday, January 26 / 4:00 PM
Multicultural Center Theater
Nancy MacLean, Professor of History at Northwestern,
argues that the most important social transformation
to come out of “The Sixties” was the opening
of the American workplace to women and to black and
Latino men. Unlike school desegregation, which largely
failed, MacLean demonstrates the success of feminists
and civil rights activists in the world of work, and
additionally uncovers the extent to which a potent conservative
counter mobilization has used the language of “color
blindness” to attempt to roll back affirmative
action in the workplace. Nancy MacLean is the Hull Lecturer
on Women and Social Justice.
Sponsored by the Center for Work, Labor, and Democracy,
the Multicultural Center, Program in Policy Studies,
Black Studies, New Racial Studies and the IHC.
