Abraham is often described as the common father of Judaism,
Christianity, and Islam, the three traditions that venerate
his memory. The use of the figure of Abraham in interfaith
dialogue, however, usually masks the fact that Abraham
as known in the book of Genesis offers scant support
for the varying interpretations given him in those religions.
Abraham both separates and links the surviving Abrahamic
religious communities and does so in interesting ways.
Jon D. Levenson, Albert A. List Professor of Jewish
Studies at Harvard University, is the author of numerous
books including The Death and Resurrection of the
Beloved Son: The Transformation of Child Sacrifice
in Judaism and Christianity and Creation and
the Persistence of Evil: The Jewish Drama of Jewish
Divine Omnipotence.
