Ira Katznelson is the Ruggles Professor of Political Science and History at Columbia University, and President of the American Political Science Association for 2006. His new book, When Affirmative Action Was White: An Untold History of Racial Inequality in Twentieth Century America, offers the most comprehensive analysis to date of federal government policies of the New Deal and postwar eras were designed to uphold white racial privilege.
