DEBATE: The Spread of Nuclear Weapons: A Debate Renewed
Kenneth Waltz (Columbia University) Scott Sagan (Stanford University)
Thursday, February 24 / 7:30 PM / Free * Please Note New Time*
McCune Conference Room, 6020 HSSB, 6th floor

In keeping with their co-authored book, The Spread of Nuclear Weapons, these two scholars will debate a number of issues relating to nuclear deterrence and non-proliferation. For example, during the Cold War, did the "balance of terror" help maintain the "long peace" between the United States and the Soviet Union? What does nuclear deterrence during the Cold War teach about the contemporary world? Will the spread of nuclear weapons to new states stabilize or destabilize international relations?

Sponsored by the Center for Cold War Studies, Department of Political Science, Graduate Division, and the Interdisciplinary Humanities Center, UCSB; The UC Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC).
