The first conference to be co-hosted by the Kavli Institute
for Theoretical Physics and the Interdisciplinary Humanities
Center, both at UCSB, this event will bring together
science and the humanities under one overarching theme:
the communication of scientific thought in drama and
narrative. To what extent are scientific concepts amenable
to dissemination in theatrical, journalistic, fictional,
or biographical narrative and performance? How much
is lost or gained in transmission? What are the causes
of success or failure? What are the points of connection
between science and aesthetics? These and other questions
will be addressed by participants from this country
and abroad, including scientists, specialists in drama
and narrative studies, and writers, including playwrights,
novelists, biographers, and science journalists. The
conference is planned to take place at the University
of California, Santa Barbara, and events will include
a wide range of lectures, panel discussions, dramatic
presentations, and other activity. Sessions will begin
at 8:15 am March 3, in Kohn Hall at the KITP, moving
to the IHC McCune Room on the afternoon of March 3.
