SEMINAR: The Haunted Stage: The Theatre as Memory Machine
Marvin Carlson (City University of New York)
Thursday, February 24 / 5:00 PM / Free
Old Gym, Room 101C, UCSB
(Download Flyer)

At various periods and cultures, almost every element in theatre production has been reused, from the narratives presented to the bodies of the actors. Any regular theatregoer is familiar with the experience of a performance calling to mind the ghosts of previous performances. Marvin Carlson’s recent book The Haunted Stage (Michigan UP, 2003) explores the process by which theatre recycles material, and examines how that reuse stimulates the spectator’s memory. Readings by Carlson are to read in advance of the seminar and are available through Shylah Hamilton (shamilton@ihc.ucsb.edu).

Presented by the IHC’s Performance Studies Focus Group, with additional support from the Department of Dramatic Art and the Early Modern Center.
