In spite of a growing body of research, the analysis
of intercultural encounters still lacks a clear methodology.
More often than not, intercultural studies borrow from
post-colonial and performance theories in order to develop
its critical discourse. This presentation claims that
it is possible to understand the intercultural experience
in its own terms. By contrasting Renaissance (Shakespeare)
and Baroque (Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz) texts with more
recent plays by Paula Vogel and Carlos Fuentes, we will
explore a series of concepts that can be used to explain
the intercultural process more effectively. Readings
by Cabranes-Grant are to be read in advance of the seminar
and are available through Shylah Hamilton (shamilton@ihc.ucsb.edu).
Presented by the IHC Performance Studies Research Focus
Group.
