TALK : Modern Staging of Traditional Chinese Drama

Born
in Hunan and now living in New York, Chen has directed productions
in Paris, Milan, Perth, Aarhus, Vienna, Berlin, Singapore, the Public
Theater, BAM, the Beijing Opera and the Lincoln Center, where his
adaptation of the 13th-century play, Orphan of Zhao debuted
this summer. He has collaborated with artists such as Meredith Monk,
Tan Dun, and Rene Jacobs. His staging of the opera Peach Blossom
Fan opens April 11 in Los Angeles at the REDCAT Center for New
Theater/ Disney Concert Hall. Chen will introduce his adaptation of
a 1599 Chinese drama, Peony Pavilion about dream love, death
and resurrection.
