Neela Vaswani’s first book, Where the Long Grass Bends
(Sarabande, 2004) is a spare, fierce and absolutely unpredictable
collection of short stories that explore her dual Indian-Irish heritage
and combine literary inventiveness with boldly reworked folk-lore
in a debut that critics have compared to the achievements of Salman
Rushdie, Maxine Hong Kingston and Angela Carter. Vaswani, the 1999
recipient of the Italo Calvino Prize, will give a reading and talk
about the challenges, the perils and the practicalities of getting
a first book published. Vaswani’s short stories have appeared
in numerous journals.
Courtesy of the University Bookstore, copies of the book will be available
for signing at the event. Refreshments will be served. Sponsored by
the IHC and the University Bookstore.
