The Long Summer: How Climate Changed Civilization
Brian Fagan (UCSB)
Wednesday, January 21 / 3:30-5 PM / FREE
McCune Conference Room, 6020 HSSB, UCSB
Brian Fagan, UCSB Professor of Anthropology and former Guggenheim
Fellow, will discuss his most recent book, The Long Summer: How Climate
Changed Civilization, (Basic Books 2004). Fagan’s thesis is
that fluctuations in climate dramatically affect human behavior, technology
and culture. He argues, for instance, that the “warming and
drying of the Sahara . . . led to the invention of a cattle-herding
culture whose descendants include both the Masai of the East African
highlands and the ancient Egyptians”.
Copies can be purchased at the event for signing courtesy of the University
Bookstore.
Co-Sponsored by the IHC and the University Bookstore.
