Elting E. Morrison Professor of History at MIT, John Dower will explore
the parallels between “world re-making” in the Pacific
after World War II and similar efforts in the Middle East after 9/11.
Professor Dower is a specialist in modern Japan and U.S.-Japan relations.
His most recent book, Embracing Defeat: Japan in the Wake of World
War II (2000), won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award
in nonfiction, the Bancroft Prize in American history, the John K.
Fairbank Prize in Asian history and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize
in history.
