Julia Taymor's 2002 film "Frida" starring Salma Hayek and Alfred Molina brings the spectacle of one of Mexico's foremost 20th century artists to the American mainstream. While some critics argue that the film distorts the life of Kahlo and presents a misleading view of the role of women in 20th century Mexican art, others praise the aesthetic, historical, and ethnic levels of the film. In presentations in Spanish and English, panelists will discuss such issues as modernity and postmodernity in the film, the role of Mexicanicity, or "lo mexicano" in both the film and Kahlo's life and work, the film's cinematic codes and representations, and the role of Kahlo in 20th century art.

This event is cosponsored by the The Latin American and Iberian Studies Program and the IHC Chicano/Latino/Mexicano Research Focus Group.
