Fernando Rey stars in Luis Buñuel’s constantly surprising and witty tale of six upper-level bureaucrats trying to sit down to a meal, yet constantly being prevented by circumstances. Though seemingly a case of mere gustibus interruptus, the film actually explores the depths and interlocking psychological realities of a class presumably human, yet somehow managing to live and act beyond any normal expectations of serious repercussions beyond a missed meal. Literally dreams within a dreams, Discreet Charm is a lifelong revolutionary’s attempt to make nice with his attractively-coiffed enemies.

Sponsored by Magic Lantern Films and the IHC’s Food Matters series.
