Gary Gerstle is one of the nation's foremost historians of race, citizenship and the state. He is the author of the prize-winning American Crucible: Race and the nation in the 20th Century, which has reconfigured our understanding of nationalism, citizenship and class. He is also the author of Working-Class Americanism: the Politics of Labor in a Textile City.
