Professor Fraser's talk highlights the intersection
of art, ethnography and colonialism in the far western
regions of China during the Republican Period (1928-1947). A
key focus is the copies of ancient Buddhist mural paintings
by Chang Dai-chien (1898-1983) at the ancient oasis
city of Dunhuang. Sarah Elizabeth Fraser is Associate
Professor and Chair of the Department of Art History,
Northwestern University, and the author of Performing
the Visual: Making Wall Paintings in China and Central
Asia (Stanford University Press, 2004).
