Buddhism is experiencing a cautious revival in contemporary
China and the numbers of Buddhist faithful are steadily
increasing, filling Buddhist temples across the country
during festival occasions. Buddhist temples and
monasteries have benefited from economic prosperity
and globalization, as overseas Chinese Buddhists have
donated money to support Buddhist institutions in China. Dr.
Xuan Fang will discuss changing relations between Chinese
Buddhist orders and the state in China today. He
will also address the heated debate on the "monastic
economy," and touch on the important role of lay
Buddhists.
