The inaugural Event for UCSB Holocaust Remembrance
Week and Commemoration of Yom Ha’Shoah, An
Evening with Madame F explores the haunting dilemma faced by
Fania Fenelon and other Jewish musicians confined to
the concentration camps during World War II. By playing
for their captors, Fania and other members of an all-female
orchestra in the Auschwitz death camp earned a better
chance at survival, but were also accused of treason
by fellow prisoners. Written and directed by pianist/singer/actress
Claudia Stevens, this critically-acclaimed musical
and dramatic performance has been the centerpiece of
Holocaust observances in more than 100 communities
across the country.
Sponsored by the Herman P. and Sophia Taubman Foundation
Endowed Symposia in Jewish Studies at the University
of California, Santa Barbara, a program of the Interdisciplinary
Humanities Center; UCSB Arts & Lectures; Department
of Religious Studies; Congregation B’nai B’rith;
Jewish Federation of Greater Santa Barbara and Santa
Barbara Hillel.
