The Culture, Gender, and Aesthetics Research Focus
Group announces “Ornament III,” its third
and final graduate student colloquium of the year.
Ph.D. candidate Emily Davis will present “Rewriting
the Colonial Romance: Ahdaf Soueif, Nayantara Sahgal,
and the New White Woman,” an essay that analyzes
the transformation of colonial romance in novels by
Ahdaf Soueif and Nayantara Sahgal. Ph.D. candidate
Jacob Berman will discuss “Poe’s Arabesque
Interior: Nativity, Nation and the Construction of
Arab-ness.” The paper will work with Poe’s
tales of domestic terror to explore the connection
between the 19th Century. The presentations will be
followed by a question and answer session.
