Some historians accused of misconduct have their careers
ruined, while others are awarded the National Humanities
Medal by President Bush. Why is that? Historians have
been in the news recently, and the news has not been
good. Accusations of plagiarism, research fraud and
classroom misconduct have made headlines, brought protracted
investigations, and, in some cases, landed big names
in the courtroom. In Historians in Trouble, Jon Wiener
argues that media spectacles end careers only when powerful
groups outside the profession demand punishment and
that such campaigns typically come from the right rather
than the left. Jon Wiener, who teaches at UC Irvine,
is the author of Gimme Some Truth: The John Lennon FBI
File (2000) and Professors, Politics and Pop (1994).
He writes frequently for The Nation and hosts a popular,
weekly interview show on KPFK.
Sponsored by the Center for the Study of Work, Labor
and Democracy, the Public History Program at UCSB and
the IHC.
