CISM Marxism/Post-Structuralism Reading Discussion
Group: Jazz Revolutions
Discussion led by Rob Wallace (UCSB)
Wednesday, June 1/2:00 PM/Free/Refreshments
1835 Ellison Hall, UCSB
From its roots to the present day, both detractors and
supporters alike have noted the potentially revolutionary
cultural and political forces at work in jazz. Starting
with selections from two books by Frank Kofsky which
caused a stir back in the day -- John Coltrane and the
Jazz Revolution of the 1960’s, and Black Music,
White Business: Illuminating the Political Economy of
Jazz -- we will discuss the political pathways of jazz.
We might also look at brief excerpts from Valerie Wilmer’s
As Serious as Your Life and other related texts about
the sociocultural forces at work within and around jazz.
Readings on reserve at the Arts Library front desk.
Refreshments will be served.
NOTE: you do not have to do the readings in order to
attend!
