The 2005 American Cultures and Global Contexts Graduate
Conference explores the ways that identities in the
US and the Americas shape and are shaped by global crises.
This year’s keynote speaker is George Lipsitz,
Professor and Chair of the Department of American Studies
at UC Santa Cruz and author of a number of influential
books including American Studies in a Moment of Danger,
a provocative look at how the increasing power of transnational
capital has prompted broad changes in culture, the nature
of social movements and the functioning of the state.
The conference will consider a number of themes including
analyses from both the US and abroad of the impact and
significance of American identities as they circulate
in other countries during times of crisis.
Sponsored by the American Cultures and Global Contexts
Center, English and the IHC.
