Britten’s Cosmicomedy:
A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Daniel Albright (Harvard University)
Tuesday, May 10 / 5:00 PM / Free
1145 Music Building, UCSB
Daniel Albright is the Ernest Bernbaum Professor of
Literature at Harvard University. In this talk, Albright
will investigate Benjamin Britten’s adaptation
of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s
Dream, understood as a cosmicomedy putting the
whole universe into play, from disorders in local weddings
to disorders in the rhythms of the seasons and the heavens
themselves. Albright will emphasize the ways in which
Britten’s score responds to Shakespeare’s
totalizing strategies: by spanning the heights and the
depths of musical discourse; by spanning the chromatic
scale through a sort of triad-based dodecaphony; and
by playing permutation games that embody chaos.
