COLLOQUIUM: Comparative Lament Traditions Research Focus Group

UCSB's IHC sponsored Comparative Lament Traditions Research
Focus Group concludes this academic year with a colloquium in the
spring quarter. Professor Martin Schwartz, (Near-Eastern Studies,
UC Berkeley), will present the keynote lecture: "Charon's Charisma:
Ancient Mediterranean Poetics of Death in Early 20th Century Rebetic
Songs." Presenters from UCSB include: Dr. Andrea Fishman (Classics)
on the topic of women's lament as "anti-music" in the ancient
and modern Greek tradition; William Hodges (Ethnomusicology) on the
lament tradition in contemporary Indonesia; and Dr. Sonia Seeman (Ethnomusicology)
on the aesthetics of the musical expressions of grief among urban
Turkish Romany (Gypsy) communities.
