TALK: Increments in Navajo Conversation Margaret Field (SDSU) Friday, April 23 / 1:30-3:30 / FREE 2536 Phelps Hall, UCSB This paper examines the use of “increments” (Schegloff 2000, Ford et al 2001), a particular type of pragmatic unit as they function in Navajo conversation. Professor Field will present the complex relationship between English and Navajo by examining subtleties that have traditionally been overlooked. Margaret Field received her Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1998 and is currently Chair of American Indian Studies at San Diego State University. She has done extensive fieldwork on the Navajo Reservation and has written about issues such as maintaining traditional Navajo language structure, politeness and Navajo directives, and the challenges of teaching bilingually.
