Professor Yang will present the introduction
to her edited book on religion, modernity, and the state
in China and Taiwan. She will situate the history of
state secularization in twentieth-century China within
a transnational comparative context and examine the social
effects of the Western categories of “religion” and “superstition” in
China. Mayfair Yang is a professor in the Department
of Religious Studies and the Department of East Asian
Languages and Cultural Studies.
