Monday, October 9 / 4:00 PM
McCune Conference Room, 6020 HSSB
A searching and analytical panel discussion on the recent
and ongoing crises in the Middle East, with a special
focus on Israel, Palestine and Lebanon. How and why did
these crises erupt, and what are the prospects for their
resolution? How have they reverberated throughout the
Middle East and beyond? What role have the United States
and other outside powers played in the unfolding of these
crises? What are the appropriate political, intellectual,
legal or ethical paradigms for understanding these crises
and seeking to resolve them? The speakers are Gershon
Shafir (Director of the Institute for International,
Comparative and Area Studies, UC San Diego), Richard
Falk (Global and International Studies Department, UCSB),
Juan Campo (Religious Studies Department, UCSB), and
Salim Yaqub (History Department, UCSB). The moderator
is Mark Juergensmeyer (Director of the Orfalea Center
for Global and International Studies, UCSB).
Sponsored by the Center for Cold War Studies, Center
for Middle East Studies, the Department of Religious
Studies and the IHC
