Text and Counterfeit

This talk by Alfred Mac Adam intends to accomplish two
things. First, it seeks to elucidate Guillermo Cabrera
Infante's mysterious 1995 text by examining it in terms
of genre, specifically as a novella. Second, it comes
to grips with the idea of self-translation by comparing
the original with the author's English version of his
own text. The two halves of the lecture are linked by
the concept of counterfeiting, which entails imitation
and deception.
Alfred Mac Adam, a specialist in 20th-century Latin
American narrative, has been a professor at Barnard College
and Columbia University since 1983. He is a translator
of Latin American fiction and has translated novels by
Carlos Fuentes, Mario Vargas Llosa, Josè Donoso,
Alejo Carpentier, Reinaldo Arenas, Julio Cort zar, Juan
Carlos Onetti, and Osvaldo Soriano. He also edited "Review:
Latin American Literature and Arts," a publication
of the Americas Society, until 2004. Currently on leave,
Mac Adam is preparing a book, The Color Line,
on how the novella in the Americas, from Poe to Garcìa
Marquez, has dealt with racial issues.
