How might theatre intersect with conflict negotiating
techniques? How could performance reflect and potentially
reconstitute the formation of social identity? In a
post-cold war world wracked by violent struggles that
are often justified by claims to nationalist self-determination,
this question has a great deal at stake. So too do the
various facilitation models operating in Palestinian/Israeli
and Balkan encounter groups, each manifesting distinct
theories of how political power operates through the
individual body. Kuftinec is the author of Staging America:
Cornerstone and Community-Based Theater (Southern Illinois,
2003).
