Distinguished theater director and playwright, Malcolm
Purkey will speak on the role of theatre in contemporary
South Africa. Malcolm Purkey, who is also a screenwriter,
a Fulbright Scholar and Head of the Division of Dramatic
Arts at Wits University was recently appointed Artistic
Director of the Market Theatre in Johannesburg. As a
founding member and director of Junction Avenue Theatre
Company, one of South Africa's leading workshop theatre
companies, Purkey has created a number of significant
South African plays including: The Fantastical History
of a Useless Man, Randlords and Rotgut, Tooth and Nail,
and Sophiatown.
