This program represents a continuation of two
themes from last year: the HOME FREE? series sponsored
by the IHC-which examined a broad range of issues concerning
shelter, security and home in the 21st century–and
the University’s recent efforts to create a more
vibrant, functional and stimulating community in Isla
Vista. The symposium will feature a presentation by
students from the College of Creative Studies, who created
downtown design guidelines for Isla Vista last year
under the tutelage of architect Kris Miller Fisher.
Participants will then discuss how this project can
serve as a springboard to other curricular initiatives.
Inspired in part by the pioneering architecture and
pedagogy of D.K. Ruth and Rural Studio, the symposium
aims to cultivate future educational projects that will
harness students’ innovation and energy in addressing
practical problems of housing and community building
in Isla Vista; a place that for many of them is “home”
away from home.
