Surf music? Dick Dale, the Beach Boys and fun in the
sun. Yes, but surf music is much more than that. Tim
Cooley’s talk presents a broad interpretation
of surf music as a viable music genre expressive of
a changing beach culture. Cooley is a surfer and Assistant
Professor of Ethnomusicology at UCSB. Scholar Judy Bauerlein
extends the analysis of surfing to yet another arena:
she looks at the “dance-like” performance
on the waves by female surfers. Her talk explores the
affinity of surfing with ballet and modern dance, as
well as the persistence of gender stereotypes. Bauerlein
is a graduate student in the Department of Dramatic
Art, a solo performer and a surfer. Presented by the
IHC’s
Performance
Studies Research Focus Group.
