This talk will outline the various myths that abound
regarding the status of women in Israel. One such myth
is that because Golda Meir was Prime Minister several
decades ago, women must enjoy political equality today.
This is far from the truth and now although we have
the largest number of women ever to serve in the Knesset,
the figure only corresponds to 15% of the representatives.
In addition there is still a lack of women in public
office and the army and discrimination in the workplace
and violence at home are both increasing.
The Herman P. and Sophia Taubman Foundation Endowed
Symposia in Jewish Studies at UCSB, a program of the
Interdiscplinary Humanities Center, is cosponsored by
UCSB Arts & Lectures, Department of Religious Studies,
Hillel. This event is cosponsored by the UCSB Women's
Center, American Students for Israel and the Jewish
Federation of Greater Santa Barbara.
