Patricia Aufderheide, in addition to her work
at American University, serves as director of the Independent
Television Service, which produces innovative television
programming for underserved audiences under the umbrella
of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Aufderheide
is a prolific cultural journalist, policy analyst, and
editor on media and society, and has received numerous
journalism and scholarly awards. This lecture is part
of a year-long series on MEDIA OWNERSHIP: RESEARCH AND
REGULATION, sponsored by The Center for Film, Television
and New Media (www.cftnm.ucsb.edu), The Critical Issues
in America Endowment, College of Letters & Science,
and the Arthur N. Rupe Chair in the Social Effects of
Mass Communication in the Department of Communication.
Two additional presentations include: November 3: Media

LLP; and November 17: Media Ownership and Copyright,
