My New Friends

Friday, October 10, 2003 / 6:30 p.m.
Introduced by Professor Michael Berry (East Asian Studies)

Shot for Taiwanese television, My New Friends documents the lives of two men living with HIV. Director Tsai Ming-liang befriended the two gentlemen and promised them anonymity. The interviews are strikingly
candid, covering many of the diverse aspects of life with HIV. Marked by the filmmaker’s care and the
candor of his subjects, My New Friends allows voices to men that otherwise would be denied by society— the first film of its kind in Taiwan. Screened on video.

Seating is limited -- free and open to the public --intended for mature audiences

Organizers:
The Council for Cultural Affairs, Taiwan, R.O.C., Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles

Co-sponsors:
University of California, Santa Barbara, The Center for Taiwan Studies, Department of East Asian Languages and Cultural Studies, Department of Film Studies, Department of Dramatic Art, The Interdisciplinary Humanities Center
