TALK: The Sex of Mourning: Widowhood and Dress
in Early Modern France
Monday, November 3 / 4 PM / FREE
4020 Humanities and Social Sciences Building, UCSB
Professor Pellegrin is well-known for her writing on the cultural,
social, and gender history of early modern France. Her work engages
topics as diverse as the formation of early modern village youth societies,
and the importance of festivity in 16th-18th century Western France.
Professor Pellegrin’s current work addresses her interest in
the role of women in early modern France and how distinctions in costume
and dress inform and illuminate our understanding of the complex social
structures at play in this epoch. Based on her most recently edited
volume, Veufs, veuves et veuvage dans la France d'Ancien Regime,
this talk will examine the meanings of widows’ mourning clothes
in early modern France.
Presented by The IHC, the Department of History, Women's Studies,
The Early Modern Center in the Department of English, and the Hull
Chair in Women's Studies
